final project

For my final project, I went to the gym where I workout for gymnastics and taped everyone who was working out. I let them choose some things that they did, and also asked them to do certain things. For some of them, I was able to keep the camera in the same spot, in order to keep the background the same. Other times, I couldn't, but it was okay.

The reason I did this is to create a video of different gymnastics skills being performed by different people. In the video, the person changes throughout the skill. I edited it using Final Cut Pro, and made sure that when the person changed, both people were in the same position, so that it flowed nicely.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with how it turned out. I imagined it coming out better, but I wasn't sure that it would work/come out perfect. I think that a couple times I pulled off the transition really well to the point where you can't tell it changes unless you watch really closely.

This works with the everyday life for all of us gymnasts. We all practice the same skills over and over again, and watch each other do it a million times. We all have our own way of doing the different skills, but in the end, it's the same skill, and really, nothing dramatically varies person to person.

I absolutely love this video, and the only thing I would have changed was to have some sort of music behind it. However, I couldn't think of the "perfect" song, and I had originally thought about keeping the original background music for effect, but it had too much of an effect. So, I'm very happy about this, and have already shared it with TONS of my gymnastics friends, and they are all ecstatic about it, too! :)

more wonders of project five

I still don't really know what I want to do. I don't know that I got any more ideas from today's class than Tuesday's. It just seems so broad, yet not really, as usual.

I like pictures. What can I do with pictures? I like my other idea, too.. But hmm. I don't know.

Yeah, I'm clueless at this point. I need to think about it over break or something. :-/

blogging

Do I read blogs? Yes. A lot. Actually, since about September, it has taken over my life. I started my own entertainment blog, and in order to get multiple posts a day, I have to search through other blogs all day long. It's a fantastic yet terrible addiction.

Why are they important? Well, I think for a lot of reasons. It gives EVERYONE the chance to be a journalist. It also gives everyone a chance to express their opinion to the world. It's an easy way to read up on different things besides the typical hard news of newspapers and newscasts. I think this is what is so exciting. It IS new and different, and it's VERY participatory, as well as democratic. People can post WHATEVER they please, and ANYONE can see it. As a reader, you can pick what you read and take what you want from it. I don't know.. There's just something about them that is very interesting, and honestly, the future rests in the internet's hands, and blogs have a big say in how things will turn out.

thoughts on project five

Hmmm. Oh how I hate these "what am I going to do" blogs. I never really know until the time comes to do it, I feel.

I was wondering if there is a way to somehow turn something I have already done into this project five. (I don't mean completed... I started to do a project for project 2, and then decided it was too much for that project, and thought I could save it for another time.. Like now.)

Basically I compiled a bunch of different things that can/did happen to me one day when I was drag racing. The story continued for the reader as they clicked on different links.. But THEY determined how the story went by the links they clicked.

I'm not sure if this will work, or if I will need to add anything to this idea to make it more project-5 worthy.. It's not anywhere near done, so I'd still have work to do.. But I don't know. That's the only idea I'm really stuck on right now. Maybe I can come up with something better later..? :)

project four explanation

For this project, I ended up doing what I wanted to do on paper, via the internet, without any special program.

In MS Paint, I drew a house sitting on a hill (picture #1) and sent it to someone to add to it. I told them they could DRAW anything they wanted.. Simple or extravant. Relevant or random. Once they were done, they sent it back to me. From there, I sent it to someone else, and the cycle repeated. I sent it to about 14 people, each time saving it as a different picture. In the end, I got something that I never expected from the house I drew, but hey, that's what this project is all about, right?! The unexpected when other people participate..?

The funny thing was that someone drew a VT symbol, which turned into a flag, which turned into a flag pole for everyone to represent their school. THAT became the main drawing, rather than my house. The even better part.. The WVU flag was drawn by the VCU person.. Not someone from WVU, even though I sent it to more Mountaineers than anything.

Some people made really big changes that are VERY obvious when scrolling down through the pictures. Others made simple changes that you might have to look at for a while in order to catch. And, some people drew things simple, like a 2nd grade art project.. Which is what I expected out of this. Others drew things that pertained to them, or the current times, like the Obama sign. It makes it even more of a "piece of art" because it could represent history some day. One day I might stumble upon this again and think "Wow, that was right after Obama was elected. Now we have a woman president!" or "That's awesome, I remember exactly where I was for all of this" etc.. :)

It's always interesting to see what peoples' imaginations can (or can't) come up with when it comes to something like this. Though I didn't get what I expected (and maybe wanted from the beginning), it was more important to make it a "group" effort.. So I technically got what I wanted, just not what I envisioned. It was fun. :)

even more thoughts on project four

I'm excited now that Sandy gave me the idea to create a new blog and let anyone author to it. I'm going to try this. And rather than just have people draw pictures, I think I'm going to draw a line, and have people make whatever they can out of the line. Or maybe even a simple circle. I just want people to use their imagination. :)

I'll either leave them all in the blog as is, or I will create a slideshow of them.. Either way it's the same idea, one is just a lot less effort on the reader.

Yes. I'm excited now, haha. :)

project four?

This picture is something three of my friends and I did together. In class, we get really bored, and need something to keep us occupied.. So we draw a picture, then pass it to the next person to add on to the picture.

I tried to keep it as a theme last time for this project, but I'm not too fond of it now.. So I'll probably redo a different one tonight with them. :)

I still wish I could have found a program that would do this online. I know I used to have one on MySpace back in the day, but now I don't know how to find it. :(

somehow I'd like to get this on my blog, but I'm thinking it's not going to work for some reason. :-/ I think it would work for what I want to do .. But I will keep looking.

more thoughts on project four

Hmm...

When we thought about this before, I posted an idea and was so happy that I thought I knew what I was doing.. But now I'm unsure. I'm not sure if we're allowed to do what I originally planned. (I was going to draw a picture and then have people add onto it and then scan it into my blog..)

Everyone seemed to have thought I could do a lot with my response post Tuesday.. But it seems kinda boring to me... So I don't know if I really wanna do anything like that or not.

Once again, I've probably confused myself. Big surprise. :-P

some more..

Uhhh... Hm. Still unsure what I want to do here.. I wonder if I could do my original idea, but on the internet somehow. And maybe I could even incorporate my list of things to do in a day. MAYBE.. I could find a program online where people can draw things and keep drawing.. And I could have a certain theme to it. A theme on what you're doing today. People would have to draw something on the picture that they're doing at that moment, what they're about to do.. etc. I like this idea. But.. is it possible?!? If not, maybe I could just do it the old fashioned way, without a computer, and scan it in as mentioned before. Urgh. I don't know. I just like the idea of drawing pictures. :)

A title, eh? How about I gotta... Because essentially people would be filling in the rest of the sentence, and drawing it.

How is this scandalous? Yikes. I don't know. It depends on what people draw, I guess..

4th project thoughts

For this project I think I am going to do a picture.

A lot of times when we are bored in Religion class, my friends and I will draw a picture, then pass the paper for the next person to draw something to add to the picture. I think this would be perfect for this class.

I'm not sure if I will use one we have already done, do a new one specifically for this class, or even begin one online somehow so that tons of people can participate.

Wow. For once, I feel pretty good about knowing what I am going to do ahead of time.. Assuming this is allowed. :)

project 3 meta text

This project was pretty humorous for me. At first I was wondering how we were supposed to "make it our own," but I learned it's all about style and showing what you like. Algorithms can be just about any kind of translation of text, whether it literally makes sense or not.

The example with the Bushisms was a lot of fun. I took text that was already created, but then also wrote it myself in the sense that I picked which words were used. Basically, I took part of a sentence, ended it somewhere that I thought would be interesting if it ended differently, and then started with whatever word was necessary (verb, noun, etc.) to complete the previous part. It's like collages of videos put together, or when people "put words in others' mouths" by jumbling them together. It came out pretty funny, I think. Then, by translating it between languages, it made even less sense, and felt more awkward. Finally, I had to put it into "moron mode." It felt right/necessary. :) I think it's great. It really just doesn't make sense, and is hard to read, but you can figure it out if you concentrate hard on it.

With my broadcast story, I simply sliced it into 3 columns and then combined them via Sice-n-Dice. What I think is the most interesting about this is the fact that there are both caps lock words/parts of words, and regularly typed. (The stories have to be written in caps, but quotes are always regular.) These are cool because they don't reallllly make sense, but they read a little. Just when you get going into a rhythm of reading it, it throws you for a loop and has a made-up word or something that makes no sense at all. You can still tell what the overall theme/idea of the story is, but it's hard to read it through.

Finally, I did the Lil Wayne song. This was my first idea, actually, because I thought it would be funny to take a raunchy song and give it a different feel. In the end, I got something different that what I hoped/expected out of it, but I'm still very happy with it. When I put the song into the Redneck Dialectizer, I expected to get something that sounded somewhat like a bad country song. I expected it to give off the complete opposite overall vibe of the rap version. Instead, it's pretty much the same. It's great! Rap and country/redneck are looked at as completely different types of music, but this shows that the language is virtually the same. It's kind of scary, really! But definitely amusing. I wanted to try and read it/vocalize it for this project, but I'm not going to lie, it felt very awkward for me to say these things and post it for class. :)

This was fun and interesting! :)

rapper turned redneck

Here I took Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" lyrics, and put them into the Dialectizer to make them what I would think would be the opposite, "Redneck"

ah say he so sweet Make her be hankerin' t'lick th' wrapper
So ah let her lick th' wrapper
She she lick me Like a lollipop (Yeah)
She she lick me Like a lollipop (Yeah)

news story

For this part, I took a news story that I wrote for my Broadcast class about breast cancer. I put it into the Slice-n-Dice and generated 3 columns. Because I have to write most of it in caps, but not all of it, it definitely looks kind of jumbled.
